Cultural Competency Training

The Outreach Core created and piloted a Cultural Competency training for Partnership staff, students, faculty and consultants. The workshop, presented in August 2004, was designed to facilitate Sovereign Nation-University research collaborations through improved understanding of policies and procedures; and, to enhance the quality of student-mentor relationships through the recognition of variations in cultural perspectives and priorities. Workshop facilitators discussed the history of the relationship between Native Nations and researchers, and strategies and barriers to Native American student recruitment and retention. A critical part of the training was to have participants work in teams to address issues that might arise when conducting scientific research in Native communities.
